VMWare on Ubuntu Hardy

Both the latest VMWare Server 1.0.6 build-91891 and VMWare Workstation 6.0.4 build-93057 install with no trouble on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. There is one small catch with the vmware-server-console, however. I came across an Ubuntu Forums thread that resolves that issue though. All you have to do is move a few included libraries out of the way and it will start just fine using the OS provided libs.

cd /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1
sudo mv libgcc_s.so.1 libgcc_s.so.1.org
cd ../libpng12.so.0
sudo mv libpng12.so.0 libpng12.so.0.org

Quick note on ISPConfig and Apache Basic Auth

I have been using ISPConfig on one of my servers to handle a few shared hosting sites for the past year or so. It isn’t bad, but its definitely showing its age. I just wanted to make a quick note about setting up a site to do Apache Basic Authentication using ISPConfig since I didn’t find anything on the internet.

It is actually quite straight forward, and anyone with apache skills is likely to try this. It doesn’t seem to allow you to simply put the Auth directives right int the “Apache Directives” box for a given site. You actually need to put “AllowOverride AuthConfig” there and then place your other Authentication directives in a .htaccess file. I am not sure if I am doing it wrong somehow, but this seemed to be the only way of accomplishing auth.

2008 SCALE University Class on Virtualization

It has been official for some time, but I am just now announcing that I will be doing a course on virtualization at this year’s Southern California Linux Expo. I was kindly invited by the folks at LOPSA (the League of Professional System Administrators).

The course will cover some basics of virtualization (and related technologies). I will also do some in depth coverage of setting up and using Open Source Xen and talk about the innovation going on in the virtualization world. I am looking forward to it and hope to see a full room.

Uberhip it is.

I finally actually own the Uberhip domain so there will be no more waffling. Uberhip.com is my official home on the web. I will still keep godber.org for family things and my other domains as long as I see fit.

ASU Mars Space Flight Facility

Martian Lava Channels

This August, I decided to say goodbye to my good friends at CGCC and take a job at the Mars Space Flight Facility back at Arizona State University. I am a Tech Support Analyst, SR and run a few hundred linux machines with supporting systems, a 100 node dual processor cluster and help manage about 45TB of data. The image to the left is from one of our instruments orbiting Mars. This instrument is called THEMIS. So far the job has been quite enjoyable. Lava Channels – Image Credit: NASA/JPL/ASU

WAZTempe and the WAZAlliance

This fall, I spent my spare time deploying an outdoor wireless mesh network in downtown Tempe. Creating WAZTempe the first metropolitan wireless network for the WAZAlliance which was purchased by another company and called WAZMetro. This was an interesting experience and while I wasn’t the brains behind the idea, I certainly was the best looking.

Pining for the Previous Page?

Do you have some strange longing for my old page? Perhaps its nostalgia, perhaps you are incapable of dealing with change. Either way, my old pages are still available here in all their retro glory on the Archive Page
